"The World’s Largest Brain" was created
by Scott R. Gibbs, MD, a neurosurgeon practicing in Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, a quiet Mississippi River town in the heartland of America.
His inspiration for the Brain Balloon came from witnessing the
overwhelming crowd appeal of special-shaped balloons at the National
Balloon Championship in 1995. This sparked his vision of a
larger-than-life icon to effectively capture the attention of all and
elevate public understanding about the brain.
Five
years later, after innumerable design renditions, Dr. Gibbs filed for a
U.S. design patent on "The World’s Largest Brain." In
October of 2000 construction began on the Brain Balloon. Standing 9
stories tall and encompassing more than 155,000 cubic feet, the
monumental Brain Balloon is truly a magnificent combination of art and
engineering.
Gibbs, originally from St. Louis, received his medical education at
the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Gibbs is an
internationally respected neurosurgeon, certified by the American Board
of Neurological Surgery, he is a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons, as well as an active member in a variety of professional
associations and societies.
In
1991, Dr. Gibbs was awarded the first Samuel P.W. Black Prize for
Excellence in Neurosurgery. He is a noted author and a former
award-winning columnist for weekly articles on general medical topics
published in the Southeast Missourian.
Clearly, Gibbs has always dared to dream big...and he has succeeded
beyond all dreams. He has twice served as the Medical Director of a
humanitarian medical mission in Carron Hall, Jamaica, and he is the
Founder and CEO of The International Brain Foundation. He has authored
and co-authored numerous medical abstracts, manuscripts and books
including the international Year Book of Neurology/Neurosurgery,
for which he has served as the Editor-in-Chief.
Dr. Gibbs resides in Jackson, Missouri with his wife Barbie, twin
