School Presentation: Kelly Middle School     Location: Benton, MO    Date: April 30, 2004
The International Brain Foundation's middle school presentations were directed toward older students who are faced with life-changing decisions every day.  Like the elementary presentations, Courtney Verhines presented a real human brain and skull for demonstration.  At Kelly Middle School the presentation focused on protection from dangers like ATVs, drugs, alcohol, and guns, and the importance of seatbelts and helmets.  "You don't have to hit your head to hurt your brain" was the lesson most emphasized by Verhines to the 266 students present.  Middle school students were shown the latest THINK FIRST video.  The video was aimed at older students and focused on specific personal safety issues.  The program video uses a direct approach to teach students about the importance of safety and good decision-making without softening the harsh realities associated with such injuries.
